FRAME RESTORATIONS

Over the centuries, original picture and mirror frames have been replaced, adapted to suit different tastes or different interiors, or simply replaced because they were no longer repairable. What they all have in common, however, is fragility and significant age . After so many years, an ornament can spontaneously break away or pieces can detach from the frame. And when the hanging arrangement fails and the picture frame falls off the wall, the amount of damage can be heartbreaking. However, in many cases, the picture frame can be repaired and restored to its former glory.

We see huge variety in our work: richly ornamented rococo frames, 17th-century ebony frames with their typical carved ‘ripple’ motif, Empire style frames and exquisite, gilded mirror frames with their crests. They all have their own specific characteristics and colouring, so the techniques that need to be applied to restore these frames also differ.

The restoration of picture and mirror frames, whether they originate from the 17th, 18th or 19th century, is a profession in its own right. A profession that requires finely honed skills and an expert knowledge of the techniques and materials. During restoration, we use proven age-old techniques to do the work, based on natural, authentic products and period-faithful recipes. And the original moulds, of which we have several in our storeroom, are also sometimes a welcome aid to achieve a good final result.

After a thorough examination in our atelier, we discuss with you the plan of action to skilfully restore and preserve your treasured frames.

Restorations are always carried out in accordance with the Code of Ethics of E.C.C.O
