RESTORATION OF A MIRROR FRAME WITH CREST

This 19th-century mirror frame fell off the wall when its hanging wire broke.
Luckily the mirror itself survived unscathed. However, the crest and joints of the frame broke in the fall.

After we had removed the mirror and stored it away safely, we started surveying the exact extent of the damage. The mitres at the bottom were broken, part of the crest had broken into several pieces and gilded pieces of plaster moulding had broken away from the frame around its periphery.

We put the loose parts back in the right places and secured them with rabbit skin glue. The rest of the damaged ornaments were filled and modelled to the right shape. Then the frame was returned to its authentic colour using gold leaf and a patina stain. The mirror was put back in the frame, which was given a new, sturdy hanging arrangement, consisting of two eyes.
